Blocked ads are advertisements that have been automatically classified as unsafe by Criteo's content moderation system and prevented from displaying to users.
 
Criteo uses advanced image and keyword-recognition machine learning engines to scan all ads and ensure they comply with advertising guidelines. 

When your ad is blocked, it means that either the product image, keywords, category, or product ID has been flagged as containing content that violates Criteo's advertising guidelines. This automated system helps maintain a trusted advertising ecosystem that aligns with both marketer goals and brand requirements.

What are the unsafe content categories?

We leverage image & keyword-recognition ML engines to protect our publishers' identity and ensure that ads do not display content and products against our guidelines. 

A product image or keyword classified as belonging to one of the following categories is considered unsafe and blocked from display in Ad banners.  

Strictly prohibited categories: 

  1. Adult content: Nudity, sexual objects, art and paintings, sexually suggestive or explicit images or texts. 

  1. Weapons: Tactical knives, swords, firearms, or any object whose main use is as a weapon. 

  1. Violence & profanity: Violent images, blood, gore, hate speech, mockery, and attacks against targeted groups.  

  1. Drugs and illicit substances: Any illegal or controlled substances. 

  1. Scam & fraud: Deceptive or fraudulent content. 

  1. Others: Any unsafe content not classified under other categories. 

Restricted categories (require legal team approval): 

These categories are not automatically blocked but require special approval under Criteo's advertising guidelines: 

  • Alcohol: Alcoholic beverages and related products. 

  • Tobacco: Tobacco products and smoking accessories. 

  • Health & Self-care: Certain health and wellness products.  

  • Gambling: Gaming and betting-related content.
